Creatine For Brainpower

Brainpower Newsletter

Sunday, June 11, 2006

This week I have some news on Creatine for brainpower, and a new page of riddles.

You may wonder at the somewhat odd page titles and even the stilted writing at times. The pages have no cost to visit, for example, so why do I have a page titled "Free Riddles?" It is because people search using certain terms. I have to use those expressions (keywords) to be sure that they can find the page in Google or other search engines.

This is why the writing is awkward at times too. I may have to use a particular arrangement of words several times to be sure the page is pulled up when people search that way. More information than you wanted, perhaps, but I just thought I would let you know.

Creatine and Brainpower

A recent Australian study tested the effects of creatine on brain function. Creatine is a compound found in meat, and has been used by athletes to help build muscle. Now the evidence shows that it helps your brain as well.

Proceedings B , a journal published by the Royal Society reports that the research showed improvement in working memory and general intelligence resulting from creatine supplementation. The dose used in the study was 5 grams per day. This is about the level used to boost sports performance, and is as much as you'd normally get in four pounds of meat, according to lead researcher Dr. Caroline Rae.

Researchers were careful to do the testing on young adult vegetarians or vegans. This made it clearer how much creatine each participant really took in, because there would be no natural source for vegans. The 5 gram level had been noted to increase brain creatine levels previously.

Study participants were divided into two groups. For six weeks one group received the creatine supplement while the other group received a placebo. Then there was no intake of placebo or creatine by either group for six weeks. For the final 6 weeks, the control and placebo group were switched.

Memory and intelligence testing were done at the start of the trial, at the end of the first six weeks, and at the start and end of the final six-week period. The results were clear in all cases: a measurable increase in brain power. Specifically, the study showed that increased creatine levels in the brain correlated with improved memory and intelligence, as well as a reduction in mental fatigue. Previous studies had shown similar results.

Supplements are usually taken in the form of creatine monohydrate, which the body converts into creatine phosphate in the muscle tissue. Bottom Line? This stuff seems to really work, and you can find it at a health food store near you.

Free Riddles

Here are some more free riddles. To start with, there is the following lateral thinking puzzle I recently dreamt up. Have fun!

The Jail Cell Clock Riddle

You are locked in a jail cell with no windows. and you need to tap out a message on the wall for the man in the other cell next to you. The problem is that you have to do it at exactly 9:15 PM, when the guard outside is switched, so your noise won't be noticed. You can't hear the switching of the guards through your walls, and you have no clock.

There is a faucet with water dripping very consistently from it in the corner, but you don't know if it is dripping at 30 or 40 or however many drops per minute, and that wouldn't give you the time in any case. You can just make out the chiming of a church bell, but it chimes just once at the top of each hour, so you can't tell the time from that. You can feel the wall facing west start to cool after the sun sets, but you don't know what time the sun is setting, and this isn't very precise in any case. Your dinner is always passed into your cell between 6:15 and 6:45. How do you determine when it is exactly 9:15 PM?

Perseverance

A definition of perseverance, from my dictionary: "Persisting in or remaining constant to a purpose, idea or task in spite of obstacles." With that definition, it is clear that perseverance can be either a good thing or a bad thing. Sometimes quitting might be the wisest choice.

New Definition: Wise Perseverance

Here is my "wise perseverance" definition: "Persisting in or remaining constant to a purpose, idea or task in spite of obstacles, when such persistence is effective and congruent with one's higher values." For example, if in your hierarchy of values, happiness ranks higher than money, don't persist in making money in ways that cause you to be unhappy. When making money is ranked higher than a particular business, you may need to quit a business when you see a better way. To wisely persist is to persist in the pursuit of your values, but not...
