This week I have my own definition of brainpower, and I'm announcing my new book/course on luck. Oh, and don't miss this week's Brainpower Exercise. Enjoy!
How do you define brainpower? "Intellectual capacity," according to my dictionary, and that's the entire entry. This two word definition leaves some things unanswered. For example, is "intellectual capacity," and therefore brainpower simply intelligence, IQ, or "intelligence quotient"?
Here is a better definition of brainpower: "The effective use of ones brain." After all, power is defined as, "The ability or capacity to perform or act effectively," or "Strength or force exerted or capable of being exerted." It isn't the possession of things with potential, but the ability to use them. Military power, for example, isn't just owning weapons, but also having men who know how to use them.
Intelligence alone is not brainpower, if there is no ability to use it effectively. Most of us have known an intelligent person who can talk endlessly about almost any topic, but has trouble actually...

- Pinocchio means "pine head" in Italian.
- The tablet on the Statue of Liberty is two feet thick.
- The "plastic leather" called Naugahyde was created in Naugatuck, Connecticut.
Correction: Last week I said Madrid is the only capital city
in Europe which is not situated on a river. A reader corrected
me: "Valletta is another European Capital that is not situated
on a river - indeed, we do not have one single river in Malta."

I just finished my new e-book, "Secrets Of Lucky People." When I was younger I read a short, out-of-print book on how to have good luck, and I applied what I learned. I've been known as a lucky guy ever since.
I previously published a short e-book on luck, but this one is something else. In particular, the "luck exercises" make it more powerful. Do these simple exercises and I guarantee you'll have more good luck. There are also more than 30 chapters full of stories, research and practical ways to create more good luck in your life. If you are interested, you can find out more about it here:
A recent study, published in the medical journal Neurology, found that those who eat three servings or more of vegetables daily have a slower rate of cognitive decline. Specifically, it is 40% slower than those who eat just one serving of vegetables daily. Green leafy vegetables (spinach, bitter lettuces) provide the most benefit.
Better memory was one of the primary benefits. Fruits, interestingly, did not help to slow memory loss (although they may have other brain-benefits). The study was done with several thousand people over the age of 65, but I think it is a safe assumption that there is some benefit in eating vegetables for younger brains as well.
Training yourself to use different perspectives can give your creative output a powerful boost. Thoughts affect how you see. For example, a photo of a face can be right in front of you, but you draw what you think a face looks like, instead of what is actually there.
Good art instructors will have you turn the photo upside down, and then draw the face. This interrupts your normal mental interpretation of the face, and leaves you with nothing to do but draw the lines the way they are. Try this technique. You'll be surprised how much more accurate a drawing done this way is.
Try other ways of changing your perspective too. Look at things as a child would, or even as a dog would. Why not train yourself to try different perspectives in all areas of your life?
Have you ever noticed what happens to an idea once you express it? Just talking about it or writing it down causes you to clarify it in your own mind. How can you use this to increase your brain power? Start writing.
By putting thoughts into words, you are telling yourself the logic behind what you think, feel, or only partly understand. Often, explaining a thought is the process of understanding. In other words, you boost your brain power by exercising your "explain power."
Try this experiment. Explain how you'll increase your brain power, even if you have no idea how right now. Just start with anything, and create an explanation. For example, start with "I'll learn chess," or "I'll read an article on the mind every week." Explain how that will help. You'll be surprised how often this...
