I have covered problem solving techniques before, including the one in the article below. But for the sake of new subscribers I have to occasionally repeat topics, and in any case, you'll find new examples demonstrating how to use the technique. By the way, the first example is based (loosely) on a true story from a subscriber.

My favorite problem solving technique is one that points out the solutions that are normally missed. It is the technique of simply challenging one's assumptions. We are often trapped into a certain approach by the assumptions we are making, and when we challenge these "hidden" assumptions, we find that there are many creative solutions that we often would miss.
An Example Of This Problem Solving Technique
Have you ever been in Los Angeles freeway traffic? We were once in bumper-to-bumper traffic, trying to get to the airport at 10:30 at night. I didn't know that there were traffic jams until late in the evening. In any case, if you have had a similar experience, you can relate to the following problem, which will show us how challenging assumptions leads to more creative solutions.
Mike had an audition for a movie role...

- The blue whale is the largest known animal on Earth.
- It is estimated that a new baby deprives it's parents of
400-750 hours of sleep in the first year after birth.
- The dandelion, considered a weed by many, it is actually very
useful. The young leaves are eaten as salad greens, the ground,
roasted roots are used as a coffee substitute, and the flowers
have been used to make wine.
A dozen interesting books, several software downloads, audio interviews, a motivational video and a mystery gift from Anthony Robbins. How much? Not a penny!
Note: I found a couple of these worth the time (and I always get something from any Tony Robbins book). Of course there is advertising - that's how they can do it, just like the ads that keep this newsletter going without a subscription fee. But you really don't have to buy a thing to get this package. - Steve

Aspartame is found in diet sodas and many other sugar-free products. It is composed of phenylalanine, aspartic acid, and methanol. Initially considered harmless, there is now some evidence that it can cause brain damage.
Phenylalanine, when stored for long periods, apparently decomposes into diketopiperazine, a known carcinogen. Aspartic was found to have caused holes in the brains of mice in one experiment. Methanol can cause formaldehyde to form in the body in the body. Formaldehyde is the fluid used to embalming bodies, and is considered toxic.
Doctors and scientists do not agree on how dangerous Apsartame
may be. Some claim it is perfectly safe. Others claim that it
may only be safe when taken with substances containing amino
acids. Taken alone, it may have neurotoxic effects which cause
memory loss, as well as
seizures, headaches, and stomach problems.
The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) says aspartame is safe if consumption doesn't exceed a minimum amount per day. It is difficult to find the original studies that show potential dangers, but I'll have more on this if I find more information. In any case, you may want to consider not drinking diet soda on an empty stomach.
A pound of onions plus a pound of carrots costs $2.70 total. A pound of carrots plus a pound of potatoes costs $2.30 total. A pound of onions plus a pound of potatoes costs $2.60. What is the price per pound for each vegetable?

Think of anything you've had a hard time understanding lately. Write down the best explanation you can of the issue, situation or problem. Writers by the way, don't necessarily write because they clearly understand something already. They often write in order to understand something. The writing brings about the understanding. To write is to think on paper, and can be a powerful way to clarify your thinking.

How accurate is the lie detector test or "polygraph"? The answer depends on who you ask. Studies show results all over the board. In a recent Department of Defense Polygraph Institute study, one experiment found that less than 37% of test takers who were non-deceptive were classified as such. The remainder were either classified as "deceptive" (false-positives) or "inconclusive." (And people think a polygraph will "prove" their innocence?)
The American Polygraph Association (APA) says...

Ready to start thinking outside the box? You hear the expression enough, but what is the box, and how do you get outside of it with your thinking? Start with the following technique.
The Metaphorical Box
To play with the metaphor a little, imagine that you are actually in a box. Written on the cardboard walls around you is a description of the world outside. This may be a very detailed and accurate description in some ways, giving you a good idea what the world is like. You may even use this knowledge to come up with some ideas that could be useful in the outside world.
Of course the world is larger and more complex than any description can capture - no matter how detailed. Obviously, as long as you stay inside this box, your thinking will be very limited. If you want to really know the world, and if you want your thinking about it to be more productive, you need to...
