The newest page on the site is on "out of the box" thinking (introduction below). I think you'll like this one.

Out Of The Box Thinking

I heard about a good example of out-of-the-box thinking the other day. A college class was given a simple problem solving exercise. They were asked to brainstorm ways to use a barometer to determine the height of a tall building.

The more scientific minds came up with solutions like using the change in the barometer readings from the ground to the top of the building to determine the height. There would be less pressure up higher, after all, and if the barometer was sensitive enough, this information could be used to...

Did You Know...

- Mark Twain's Tom Sawyer is generally believed to be the first novel that was ever written on a typewriter.

- You may be as much as a centimeter shorter at the end of the day, due to the compression of cartilage in your joints, but you'll stretch out again overnight (if you lay down).

- The strongest muscle in you body, for its size, is your tongue.

This Week's Brainpower Practice

Make a note or two each day about the ways in which your thinking was really effective or creative. The process of noticing how well your brain functions in certain areas or at certain times encourages that better functioning on an unconscious level.

After the Roger Bannister ran the first four-minute mile many people were suddenly able to. Humans didn't suddenly evolve physically, but their expectations and beliefs about what is possible changed. You can use the examples of others to accomplish this change, but you can also use your own success as well. Note your "brainpower successes" for a week, and you'll start to have more of them.

Can You Detect Lies?

Does avoiding eye contact really mean someone is lying? The latest research says no. In fact the latest research says that there is almost nothing that indicates a person is lying. But I know a few poker players who would disagree. In fact there are major flaws in the "scientific" studies of lying. I cover four of them in Part One of my new e-book, "Lying: Signs Of Lying And How To Trap A Liar."

New Innovations

Would you like to have ideas for new innovations? One way to get them is to extract some basic ideas from existing products and inventions, and then apply them to new areas.

For example, if you look at a thermostat. you might think "A device to control the indoor climate." That is certainly an idea that can be used to come up with something new. Look deeper, though, if you want more creative innovations. Think, "It measures the temperature and then, using that information, turns the heater on or off, to keep the house comfortable."

In other words, it uses measurement in order to control something. That is a deeper concept. With the technology already existing today, we can...
