Are more intelligent people wealthier? Perhaps they should be, but that's not what the evidence shows. Read on...
A new national study done by Jay Zagorsky, an economist at Ohio State University's Center for Human Resource Research, looked at the relationship between intelligence and wealth. The results? There is no relationship.
Previous studies have found that income is generally correlated with intelligence. This study did as well, showing an increase of $6,000 to $18,000 per year for those with an IQ over 130 versus those with an average IQ (100). However, income does not necessarily translate into wealth.
Geniuses, it seems, are just as likely to run into debt problems, or to miss payments on mortgages. They may make more money, but they don't have more net worth to show for it. The study used survey information from over 7,000 respondents born between 1957 and 1964. Bottom line? There was no correlation between IQ and wealth.
As I have said before, true brainpower isn't just having intelligence, but knowing how to use it.
How accurate is the lie detector test? The answer to that depends on who you ask. Various studies show results all over the board. In a recent Department of Defense Polygraph Institute study, one experiment found that less than 37% of test takers who were non-deceptive were classified as such. The remainder were either classified as "deceptive" (false-positives) or "inconclusive." (And people think a polygraph will "prove" their innocence?)
The American Polygraph Association says on their web site that the problem of accuracy is one of differing methods of measuring it. Critics, they say, "who often don't understand polygraph testing, classify inconclusive test results as errors." This isn't an error, they say, but...

If a man can walk 2 miles per hour, and needs nine hours of sleep each day, what is the fastest he could travel the 3000 miles from New York to Los Angeles?
(answer below)
Watch your response to various foods, and avoid foods that cause subtle allergies. These can include wheat, corn, peanuts and dairy products. They can cause digestive problems and brain fog in some people.
In Japan some companies pump the odor of cinnamon or nutmeg into the air conditioning system in offices, in order to increase productivity. I'm not sure if there is good evidence for it's effectiveness, but it seems like a safe experiment to try. Simmer some cinnamon or nutmeg in water and let me know if you notice any effect on your thinking, motivation or energy level.
These new ideas for criminal justice will undoubtedly offend many people. It isn't my intent, but it seems inevitable. We all have different ideas on what exactly we want to accomplish with the police, courts and prisons. My own ideas have had me labeled a "right-winger, a "bleeding heart liberal" and worse. We'll, here they are anyhow.
Get Rid Of The Exclusionary Rule
First of all, I think we all understand why we exclude evidence obtained illegally. It is crucial to a free society that we protect all people's rights, even those accused of a crime. However, consider the following scenario: A murder is committed, the killer has the gun, with the victims blood on it, and photos of the victim, and more evidence, all in his apartment. All of it is seized by police who decide to ignore the need for a search warrant, and so it cannot be used as evidence.
Does it seem strange to anyone else that the truth can't be the truth just because of how it was obtained? I say any evidence that is evidence should always be allowed...
