Brainpower Newsletter

Sunday, October 28, 2007

Fortunately I have many who keep my mistakes from going too far. Last week in the trivia questions I said that "Chinese Gooseberries" (also known as kiwi fruit) came from New Zealand. A reader pointed out that they actually are native to southern China and were introduced to New Zealand about a hundred years ago. (Thanks Wilmien)

Hopefully you won't find any errors in the newsletter this week.

Enjoy!

An Open Mind?

Why is an open mind is like an open well? Because it is easily contaminated by anything the wind blows in. This is the problem with what many call an open mind, in any case - like someone who is considered open minded because he believes in visitors from space, bending spoons with mind power, and "remote viewing" using ESP. This, however, is more a sign of a gullible mind, so let's look at a healthier definition of the term.

An Open Mind - A Better Definition

Of course, we usually like to think that we are open minded, and that this is a good thing. According to a couple different dictionaries this means...

- A hen can lay over 240 eggs per year.

-The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World (according to ancient Greek historians) are: The Great Pyramid of Giza, The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, The Statue of Zeus at Olympia, The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, The Colossus of Rhodes and The Lighthouse of Alexandria.

- The new seven wonders, decided by a worldwide popularity poll done by the Swiss-based, non-profit New Open World Corporation (NOWC), in 2007, are: Chichen Itza in Yucatán, Mexico, the Christ the Redeemer Statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the Great Wall of China in China, Machu Picchu in Perú, Petra in Jordan, the Roman Colosseum in Italy, and the Taj Mahal in India. The Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt got an honorary mention.

Palindromes

What are palindromes? They are words or phrases that read the same backward as forward. The word "bib" is a palindrome for example, as is the phrase "Madam, I'm Adam." Look carefully at the latter and you'll see that the letters are in the same order in both directions. The word, by the way, is derived from the Greek "palíndromos," meaning "running back again."

RACECAR, DEED, LEVEL...

It gets a little more difficult to find longer single-word palindromes. It is much more difficult when it comes to phrases or sentences, like the ones below...

This Week's Brainpower Practice

Snacking

Eating a heavy meal can make you tired and unable to concentrate. When working on projects that require a lot of mental energy and thought, trying eating a lot of small healthy snacks instead of large meals. Stay away from the sugary and white-flour based snacks. My favorites? Nuts, whole-grain crackers, boiled eggs, and low-sugar chocolate (60% cacao or higher).

This Week's Page Reminder

(A reminder of useful pages you may have missed.)

Power Nap

What's a "power nap?" It used to be called a catnap. The term power nap was apparently coined by Cornell University social psychologist James Maas. Basically it is a short nap that is designed to refresh you. What does the research say?

According to Dr. Sara Mednick, at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, napping benefits cell repair, heart function, and hormonal maintenance. A power nap maximizes these benefits, by getting the rejuvenative effects in as short a time as possible. The brain benefits as well. A study done by NASA found that...

Survival Of The Fittest?

A Lie?

"Survival of the fittest" is the way most people explain Charles Darwin's theory of natural selection. The underlying premise is that species which are best "fitted" for survival by some standard will be the ones to survive. Some people even feel that because this is "natural," it is how things "should be". At it's worst, the concept is then applied to human survival to justify not helping (or even actively hurting) those who are "unfit" for survival.

Survival of the fittest is a lie, at least in the common conception that people have of it. There is no natural selection of survivors according to ANY pre-existing standard of being "fit" or the best specimens, or anything of the sort. You can say after the fact that...
