I just put up a new page on problem solving, and made an index for the pages on codes and cyphers.

Try These Problem Solving Skills

Many problem solving skills can make you a more effective and creative problem solver. But knowing how to use visualization and direct your attention are two of the best. Take a look at the following examples of how to use these skills, and how to develop them further.

Visualization As A Problem Solving Skill

We can't all visualize things easily. Many of us do our mental work more with words than images. However, anyone can get better at visualization with a little practice. The payoff? More creative and sometimes quicker solutions to problems of all sorts.

For example, suppose you operate a gas station. You visualize a customer coming into your lot and pulling up to the pump. You get inside the customer's head and try to see things as he or she does. But in your mind, your nice vision of him pulling up to get gas is intruded on by another...

Secret Codes

For those of you that enjoyed the recent pages on cryptograms, code breaking and code making, I have news. All the pages on the subject are now described and linked to on the new page, "Secret Codes." So when you are ready for some brain exercise, you can check it out using the link here: http://www.increasebrainpower.com/secret-codes.html

This Week's Riddle

There is a palindrome (A word that is spelled the same forward and backwards) which is also the name of a language. What is it?

(answer below)

Update

A couple subscribers sent in the following suggestion for another long word with just one vowel: "rhythmic" (The solution given for the longest was "strength," also with 8 letters.) Although the "y" is used as a vowel, this meets the criteria given. (Thanks Kshipra, Steve and Quentin.)

Also, the word "psychorhythms" is found in some dictionaries. (Thanks Karly.)

This Week's Brainpower Practice

Ever just relax and daydream? It's a good start towards a more creative imagination. To be able to actively imagine things, to see and hear things in one's mind, is a valuable ability. Why not practice today? In Future newsletters, I'll have more on how to put that ability to good use.

Imaginary Friends
A Problem Solving Technique

Imaginary friends can be a real help when its time to solve problems.
Sometimes we're at our most creative when interacting with others. We sit talking to friends and each feeds off the other's ideas. Plus, a discussion can really clarify things. Try Talking To Albert Einstein.

Talk to Andrew Carnegie or Lee Iacocca if your problem has to do with making a factory more productive. Questions about love can be addressed to the Dalai Lama. The idea is to have conversations in your head with anyone who can help. Why...
